Page-number-only PDF workflow

Add Page Numbers to a PDF
Without Rebuilding The Whole File

Upload a PDF, choose where the numbers appear, set the starting number, and download a numbered PDF copy. This page is for page numbers first, not repeated header or footer text.

The numbering workspace opens with page numbers enabled by default. If you later need names, dates, or labels on every page, switch to the broader header/footer tool instead.

  • Add visible page numbers to an existing PDF
  • Choose header or footer placement from the current tool controls
  • Set the starting displayed number
  • Apply numbers to all pages or a selected range
  • Skip the first page when you need an unnumbered cover
  • No signup and no forced watermark
  • Privacy details are explained below and on the privacy page

PDF numbering happens after the file opens in the browser workspace. Some non-PDF uploads may be converted into PDF first.

What this page does

This page helps you add visible page numbers to an existing PDF and download a new numbered copy. The common workflow is: upload the PDF, keep header and footer text turned off unless you need it, choose the numbering position and format, then export the finished file.

Reports, assignments, and submissions

Number long PDFs so reviewers, teachers, or teammates can reference exact pages quickly.

Merged PDF packets

Restart numbering after combining multiple documents into one final PDF.

Cover-page workflows

Leave the first page unnumbered, then begin visible numbering on the next page.

Print-ready PDFs

Download a numbered copy before printing contracts, manuals, forms, or handouts.

Task-specific numbering controls

The current tool is most useful when your job is to number pages cleanly, not add repeated labels everywhere.

Position controls

Place page numbers in the header or footer, left, center, or right, using the current numbering controls.

Starting number

Begin the visible numbering from page 1 or another displayed number when your document needs a custom sequence.

Range and skip-first options

Apply numbers to every page, a chosen page range, or keep a cover page free of numbering.

Download a new PDF

Export a numbered PDF copy after the changes are applied in the browser workspace.

Use this page when the job is page numbers only

Users often confuse page numbering with broader header and footer editing. The table below is the key distinction this landing page needs to communicate.

User needUse this pageUse the broader tool
I only need visible page numbersYes. This page is for adding page numbers fast with numbering controls turned on first.Possible, but broader than necessary if you do not need repeated text.
I need names, dates, labels, or repeated textUse this page only if page numbers are your main job.Use the broader tool when you need headers, footers, and variables together.
I want an unnumbered cover pageYes. Use skip-first-page or starting-number controls after upload. Also supported there, but not explained as clearly for page-number-only jobs.
I need a separate numbering routeThis landing page opens the shared finishing workspace with page-number intent. The same underlying workspace also supports header and footer text.

What happens to your file

After your PDF opens in the numbering workspace, you apply page numbers and download a new PDF copy. If you start with a supported non-PDF file type, the uploader may convert it to PDF before the numbering step begins.

How to add page numbers to a PDF

These steps match the current workflow more closely than the old generic landing-page copy.

  1. Upload your PDF

Choose the PDF you want to number. The file opens in the finishing workspace with page numbers as the primary task from this landing page.

  2. Choose the page-number placement

Pick header or footer placement, then choose left, center, or right according to your document layout.

  3. Set the visible numbering rules

Select a page-number format, adjust the starting displayed number, and use page range or skip-first-page settings if needed.

  4. Apply the changes to the PDF

Apply numbering across the selected pages instead of placing each number manually.

  5. Download the numbered PDF

Export the finished copy and download it. If you need a smaller file after numbering, use Compress PDF.

Limitations to know before you start

This page is for numbering pages. If you need repeated names, dates, labels, or document IDs, use the broader header/footer tool.

Roman numeral numbering is not currently exposed in the visible numbering controls, so it is not promised here.

If your file is not already a PDF, the uploader may convert it to PDF before the numbering workspace opens.

Large files can take longer to open and render before you apply numbering.

Troubleshooting common page-number issues

My cover page should stay unnumbered

After upload, use the skip-first-page option or start the visible numbering later so your title or cover page stays clean.

The page numbers cover my content

Switch the placement from header to footer or move between left, center, and right. You can also adjust margins and font size in the advanced controls.

I actually need names or repeated labels too

Go to the Header, Footer & Page Numbers tool.

My source file is Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or an image

The uploader can convert supported file types into PDF first, then open the numbering workspace on the converted PDF.

Add Page Numbers to PDF FAQs

How do I add page numbers to a PDF online?

Upload your PDF, keep page numbers enabled, choose the position and format you want, apply the changes, and download the numbered PDF copy.

Can I start numbering from page 2 or leave the cover page blank?

Yes. Use the skip-first-page control or adjust the starting number after the PDF opens in the page-number workspace.

What is the difference between this page and the header/footer page?

This page is for page numbers only. The broader header/footer page is better when you need repeated names, dates, labels, or document IDs in addition to numbering.

Does the original PDF stay unchanged?

Yes. You download a new numbered PDF copy. Your original source file is not overwritten on your device.

Do I need to sign up or accept a watermark?

No signup is required, and the page copy and tool flow both present a no-watermark download experience.

Does this page support roman numerals?

Roman numerals are not currently exposed in the visible numbering controls, so this page does not promise them.

What happens if my file is not already a PDF?

Supported non-PDF uploads may be converted into PDF before the numbering workspace opens. For privacy details, review the site privacy page.
